Kaknäs Tower – high-level security

Kaknäs Tower is the hub of Swedish radio and television broadcasts. With its extremely high security requirements, media operator Teracom selected lock and access control systems from ASSA.

Central hub

Kaknäs Tower is one of northern Europe’s tallest buildings, standing at 155 meters high (170 m including the mast). In addition to radio and television broadcasts, it is a central hub for broadband networks and other new digital services.
Naturally, security is crucial for Teracom’s operations. Radio and television broadcasts must be aired no matter what, particularly during national crises. For Kaknäs Tower and several of its other facilities, Teracom has chosen an access control system from ASSA.

Makes work easier

Maria Sunnegårdh is security coordinator at Teracom and in charge of physical security at Kaknäs Tower. Alarms, cameras and physical access are her specialty.
“The new access system makes my work much easier,” Sunnegårdh says. “We used to have three different key systems, but now we only have one in the whole country. That makes it easier for service technicians and businesspeople to work throughout Sweden. They have access to all our facilities.
“At the same time, it ensures greater security. We can set start and end dates, even times, on individual keys. If someone doesn’t return a key, we can just deactivate it.”
While the Kaknäs Tower is the centerpiece of the company’s operations, the mainly digital television signals we receive at home do not come directly from there; they pass through strategically positioned antennas and masts throughout the country.

User friendly

Many of the facilities are very remote. A security system for such locations requires not only strict access control, but also user friendliness and convenience, says Niclas Linnarsson, project manager at ASSA.
“The solution we developed with Teracom allows administration of electromechanical keys and smart keycards in the same system. The combination of mechanical and electronic systems ensures high security and convenience as well as good overall economy.”
