New lock system at Sahlgrenska Hospital

Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) in Göteborg is the largest hospital in northern Europe. The flexibility of the ASSA dp system is highly appreciated as the hospital replaces its old lock system.

Large volumes

16,500 unique keys. 10,000 cylinders. When SU changes locks, the volumes are enormous.
“Sahlgrenska is like a small city,” says Claes Helgesson, operations technician in charge of locks at Västfastigheter, the company that builds, manages, operates and maintains the university hospital’s facilities.
For the past couple of years, the hospital has been in the process of replacing its old lock system with the ASSA 7000.
“The 7000 system is designed to easily manage the huge volume of traffic the hospital sees,” says Mats Nykom, master locksmith at Låsspecialisten Bröderna Nykom AB.
He is planning the hospital’s lock system, in collaboration with Claes Helgesson and Västfastigheter’s security division.

Flexible functions

Since the installations began, the ASSA dp system has been introduced on the market. Today ASSA dp is used for special functions and for all new installations. The phone switchboard has been fitted with dp locks, the new healthcare building will have dp locks—the numbers are already in the thousands.
“The dp system will be involved in all kinds of contexts,” Helgesson says.
The system is highly appreciated for its endless combinations and flexible functions. Another advantage is that Nykom can deliver keys faster, enhancing the service level.
“The ASSA dp is a more flexible lock system,” he explains. “It’s easier to calculate and to manage.” And that spells faster service for Helgesson and Västfastigheter.

New opportunities

In the future, the lock system will be based even more on the needs of the operations, Helgesson says.
“Today we install the lock systems per building. In the future we can design them based on the building and its operations.”
That’s important for a hospital, where departments and wards may move around or consist of units in several places.
“Sometimes the staff complain about how many keys they have. The flexible ASSA dp system will cut that number down.” Helgesson says.
